Oprah Is Not Interested In Dianne Feinstein’s Senate Seat

If you were hoping to have Senator Oprah as your local representative, you’ll have to keep praying to God (aka Oprah) to make that wish come true. Oprah Winfrey isn’t joining Congress and saving the country from disaster as it was speculated. California Senator Dianne Feinstein is set to turn 90 this year and people are saying that maaaaaaaaaaaybe she should retire. Well, come hell or hospitalization, Dianne plans to stick around so Oprah won’t be moving in anytime soon even if she wanted to!

Despite the reports of Dianne’s retirement being grossly exaggerated (according to her people anyway), people have been coming up with their dream replacement. When Kamala Harris vacated her seat to become Joey B’s VP, Governor Gavin Newsom chose a Latino senator as her replacement. Facing pressure from various groups, Newsom promised that if Feinstein retired, he would find a black woman to take on the role. via Entertainment Tonight:

Lately, the Democrat has been facing some pressure from within her own party to resign before her term ends in January 2025. If Feinstein were to retire, California Governor Gavin Newsom would pick her replacement.

The questions about Feinstein’s staying power date back all the way to 2021. At the time, Newsom said he would appoint a Black woman should Feinstein’s seat become available.

Enter Oprah Winfrey! From Cincinnati mayor Jerry Springer to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to that dude that ran the country from 2019-2020, Oprah rising to office would follow in the grand tradition of pop culture figures relaunching as government figures. The Associated Press said that her name was going around “in California circles.” That’s Hollywood for you. If it’s not a reboot, it’s a rebrand! In the grand scheme of things, this isn’t the worst of ideas. Instead of a stimulus check, the former TV host would simply hand out Pontiac sedans (just watch out for those taxes cuz that’ll get ya!). Sadly for 90s talk show stans, Oprah isn’t interested. As The Los Angeles Times puts it:

The media mogul’s spokeswoman on Thursday threw cold water on the idea that Winfrey could make a foray into politics, saying she “is not considering the seat should it become vacant.”

Winfrey, who has never held public office, has repeatedly turned down appeals to run for president. An endorsement from the talk show host moves markets, pushing millions of Americans to try new diets and turning books into bestsellers overnight.

I don’t blame her. Being in public office sounds tiring. Everyone will nitpick what she does. She won’t even be able to spend a paltry $100 on a gift for an acquaintance without being blamed for contributing to our national debt!
